No matter which genre you write in, practicing writing in the short form is always going to improve your work. So take a look at our resource: a guide to writing a true story in 140 characters or lessby Ross Sutherland. It’s written to aid a twitter project called 140 characters, however the skills involved apply to any writer.

And if you are part of the LGBT community then we would like to hear your story. We’re looking for 140 people to tell us their Coming Out Story in 140 characters or less (a “tweet” on Twitter). Have a look at Ross’ guide above, and then tweet your tale at: www.twitter.com/OUT140, text on 07786351214 or email: shell@shellytelly.co.uk

Or if you would like to tell your coming out story and pick up some film-making techniques, then sign up for our free micro-moviemaking workshops in Norwich and Cromer.
10.40-1pm, Free
Thurs 10 Dec, The Cube in the Forum,
Thurs 17 Dec, Virginia Court Hotel, Cromer
To find out more or to sign up please contact Shelly Telly: shell@shellytelly.co.uk

140 stories will be displayed in an interactive show at FUSION in the Forum from 11-25 January 2010.

======================================
Challenging work, but the right kind
======================================
Writing can be a lonely business. So we’ve asked one of our Escalator winners, Martin Ungless, to keep us updated on his highs and lows throughout the year. No doubt you’ll be able to relate to some part of the experience, and if it inspires you to try out for Escalator Literature 2010 (coming up again in May) so much the better. An entry to the competition consists of the original text, your translation, and an entry form. The latter (with the full competition rules) is available on the competition website at http://www.bcla.org/ or can be obtained by post from the organiser, Dr Jean Boase-Beier, School of Literature and Creative Writing, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ.
Entries cost £7 for one, £12 for 2 or £16 for 3. There are prizes of £350 (First Prize), £200 (Second Prize) and £100 (Third Prize), and entries may receive commendations. The competition judges are Peter France, Stuart Gillespie, Amanda Hopkinson, Elinor Shaffer and Glyn Pursglove, and they are assisted by a large number of specialist readers.
The closing date for the competition is in February each year; reading then takes place during the spring and the judges usually meet in June to make their decision. Announcements are made straight after the judges’ meeting, and there is a prize-giving event every year in the summer or autumn, to which winners are invited.
Entries received after the closing date will go forward to the following year’s competition, so it is possible to enter at any time of the year, using the form for the current year.

Members News: New service for academic writers

Anthony Haynes and Karen Haynes have launched a new business focused on academic, professional and educational publishing. The Professional and Higher Partnership will work at the interface between authors and publishers
Commenting on the Partnership’s services to authors, EAW member Anthony Haynes explained, “some academic, professional and educational authors could benefit from the services of a literary agent, but have difficulty finding a suitable agent – the sector is biased towards trade publishing. We’re here to fill the gap.
“There are also many others who do not need full agency representation, but could do with help making pitches and negotiating contracts.
