Debenham Festival

Debenham is a village 12 miles north of Ipswich on the B1077. Venues are all in the High Street. Festival writers' books will be on sale at 22 High Street, home of Lesley Grant-Adamson who encourages EAW members to call in and say hello.

Friday June 18

Historical novelist Sarah Bower reveals Tricks of the historical fiction trade in a workshop for all abilities. Only 15 places. Dove cottage. 10.30 - 12.00 £15.00

Literary Lunch. Sheila Hardy talks about Arsenic in the Dumplings, a Casebook of Historic Suffolk Poisonings. The Angel Inn. 12.30 - 2.00 pm £20.00

Children’s writer David Bedford visits the primary school. 2.00 - 3.00 pm

Novelist Bernardine Evaristo discusses Hello Mum, a remarkable piece of writing about knife crime. The novella is the Debenham library choice for their Community Read. St Mary’s church. 7.30 pm - 8.30 pm No charge.

Saturday June 19

Benedict Gummer will discuss The Scourging Angel, his excellent history of England around the time of the Black Death. Fact, not fiction. A must for anyone interested in the medieval period. 2.00 pm - 3.00 pm Long Room, Red Lion £3.00.

Roma Tearne will read from her new novel, The Swimmer, set on the Suffolk coast where she used to live. Will it repeat the success of her popular Brixton Beach? 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm Long Room, Red Lion £3.00

New Poets. The winners of the Crows Hall Country Fayre poetry competition, judged by Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales, will read, along with other promising local poets. 4.30 pm - 5.30 pm Long Room, Red Lion No charge

A rare chance to hear Anthony Thwaite, poet, and Ann Thwaite, biographer, talk about their literary lives. He has a new volume of poems, she has written her family history. 7.30 pm - 8.30 pm St Mary’s church £4.00 Wine will be offered.
